Anthology out now!!!

October 18, Quarashi released a 3 disc set, titled "Anthology". This is an official release by Quarashi, NOT A FAN-MADE compilation! The set is made up of 2 CD's, and 1 DVD. The first disc of the set, will focus on Quarashi's 20 most popular hits. The second disc, will focus on rarities, demos, and b-sides. The DVD will have all the band's music videos, as well as rare concert footage, interviews, and other various clips.

This album can be bought digitally from www.tonlist.is | www.icelandicmusic.com (English version of tonlist.is)

Hard copies of Anthology will be released later this week and will be available for purchase worldwide.

Quarashi has officially released new compilation album, "Anthology".

"Anthology" is a 3 disc compilation album. It is the first album of any kind to be officially released by Quarashi since "Guerilla Disco", in 2005. The set consists of 2 CD's, and 1 DVD.

The first disc of the set, focuses on Quarashi's 20 most popular hits. The second CD of the set focuses on rare, un-released, demos, and b-sides material from Quarashi. The third disc of the set, the DVD, contains all of Quarashi's music videos, rare concert footage and backstage clips, interviews, and concert footage from Quarashi's final concert in July at Club NASA in Iceland.

One of the songs from the album's second disc, "Beat Em" is a song that Quarashi had planned to release on the 2002 album "Jinx", but didn't finish it in time to fully produce it for the album. Quarashi has uploaded the song to Soundcloud for fans to listen to and have a preview of the album. Listen to "Beat Em:, from the upcoming album "Anthology", here:

Quarashi Metal Box Set

Quarashi Metal Box Set

In 2005, Quarashi released a hand-made metal box set in very limited quantity. The box set included two albums, the Iceland releases of "Jinx" and "Guerilla Disco", a bonus DVD containing all of their music videos from "Guerilla Disco", and autographed photos of the group members. Also included with the set, was a biography booklet, containing the same biography that is on the DVD.

I came across one of these boxes recently, and was able to get it. I thought I would take pictures, scan, rip discs, etc. to give everyone the pleasure of enjoying this rare box set.

The DVD that is contained in the box set includes all of the music videos from Guerilla Disco. I have re-uploaded these videos and they are now, once again, available for download. The links had been dead for over a year, but the links are now active again!

I have also uploaded the intro to the DVD to Youtube, so that you all can have a taste of what it's like to watch this DVD. Click here to watch the DVD intro.

The news is in, signed sealed, and delivered by secure sources, Quarashi is going to be playing a one time only gig at the Icelandic festival “Besta Útihátíðin” this summer (2011).

The date for this magical event is July the 9th and all members of the band both original and otherwise have agreed to come back. This is quite an amazing feat considering that many of them live in different countries now.

This will also be the first time Hössi and Tiny perform together.

So boys and girls get ready to get down and par-tey like possessed beasts…QUARASHI IS BACK!

Tiny's Interview

Dray: Hello again. Thank you for your time. At what age did you first start rapping, and who were your first influences?

Tiny: Between age 10 and 11. Influences came from both westcoast and eastcoast early 90's hip hop.

Dray: When did you first hear Quarashi's music, and what were your thoughts?

Tiny: 13 I think, when they first came out and when I heard it I felt it was a positive step for the hip hop "movement" in Iceland.

Dray: Did you know any member(s) of Quarashi personally before joining the band?

Tiny: No, but Ómar sat in a judging panel once which nominated me the most promising rapper. I think I was 15 at the time

Dray: Who asked you to join the band? How did that person hear about you?

Tiny: I recorded a song called "Straight Execution" when I was 17 years old, it was Solvi who heard it and asked me to meet him about a year later.

Dray: Can you remember the first track you recorded with Quarashi or any one of its members? Can you remember your first live performance with Quarashi?

Tiny: Yes of course, the first song I recorded was "Race City" and the first gig I did with them was at the Icelandic Airwaves "Nasa".

Dray: What is your favorite Quarashi song that you had a part in? What is your favorite Quarashi song that you were not a part of?

Tiny: My favorite song that I had part in is with out a doubt "Stars"... my favorite Quarashi song that I had no part in is "Switchstance". I like how raw it is like something recorded in a basement or a garage after school...

Dray: Did you have any part in the writing process of Quarashi songs other than your lyrics?

Tiny: I wrote all my lyrics, some choruses and the collaboration part with me and Omar in "Murder Frenzy".

Dray: What was your favorite and most valued experience during your time with Quarashi?

Tiny: My most valued experience has to Japan, I played in front of a 20,000 people crowd in Tokyo, and in Osaka 15,000 people.

Dray: Did Quarashi ever have any plans for the USA during your time in the band?

Tiny: Yes eventually I think, but after touring Japan and then Iceland, morale was low. Stoney quit the band, then Omar, and they wanted to concentrate on their own things rather then make another run at the states. Stoney quit I guess from being kind of pushed to the curve in Guerilla Disco. Solvi tried to include him at one point, but he was less and less involved in the songs and maybe it was his own lack of interests... I mean the band had been working for 6 or 7 years before I joined. In that time a lot of issues came up and were dealt with differently... don't know if there was already some bad blood between them. Solvi once said that a band was like a marriage and a business relationship, that's kind of how Quarashi was, and when I joined the love was fading and partners were losing interests... that said, we had a great time, and I still have love for those guys today.

Dray: There were rumors that songs from Guerilla Disco were being aired on New York radio stations in the USA, and the band even played a few shows in New York during that time. Are any of these rumors true?

Tiny: We played in New York but that was before Guerilla Disco, and I have never gotten any royalty checks from the states for the music I've been involved in as far as I'm concerned.

Dray: After the Quarashi break up, did you keep in touch with any of the members of the band? Did you do anything musically after the break up, and what do you do now? Do you want to continue making music?

Tiny: I've kept in touch with Solvi regularly since the break up. I meet the others from time to time since we live in the same city and it's small. Quarashi was a rap/hip-hop group from Reykjavík, Iceland. It was composed of Hössi Ólafsson (replaced by Tiny (real name Egill Olafur Þorarensen) on the final album), who was the lead vocalist and frontman of the group, Ómar Swarez (Ómar Örn Hauksson), who served as a rapper and hype man, and Steini a.k.a. Stoney (Steinar Orri Fjeldsted), who also served as a rapper and hype man. The fourth member of the group was Sölvi Blöndal, who was their producer, keyboardist, percussionist, and drummer. He also helped in the songwriting process. For live shows, Quarashi was joined by a guitarist (Smári "Tarfur" Jósepsson, later replaced by Vidar Hákon Gislason), a bassist (Gaukur Úlfarsson), and a DJ (DJ Dice, later replaced by DJ Magic).

The group has a loyal following, especially in their native Iceland. Each of their records (Switchstance, Quarashi, Xeneizes, Kristnihald undir Jökli, Jinx, Guerilla Disco) have sold well in their homeland. Quarashi was a rap group, but they combined elements of rock, techno, and funk into their songs, lending an air of unpredictability to their music. Comparisons to Rage Against the Machine, Eminem, and The Beastie Boys are often heard when discussing Quarashi, but the group had their own unique style that distinguished them from other famous rap/rock groups. Their influences ranged from Public Enemy (Blöndal says that P.E.'s Fear Of A Black Planet is what inspired him to make music) to Led Zeppelin, and that can be heard in their songs.

Sölvi Blöndal

Solvi was one of the founders of Quarashi. He was the producer, and also played the drums at concerts. Sölvi has also played in bands such as "Púff", "Júpíters", "Ss span", "2001" and "Stjörnukisi". In the band "2001" he played with Gaukur (Quarashi bassist) and Hössi was the lead singer. Sölvi named "Fear of a black planet" by Public Enemy as the record that got him into what he is doing today.
Sölvi has a small record label called Lax Records, and Quarashi's first EP "Switchstance" was released through that label. As a producer Sölvi has been working with Icelandic artists such as Vinyl and Björgvin Halldórsson.

Tiny was an Icelandic rapper famous for his song "Straight Execution". After Hossi left Quarashi in late 2002, the other members immediately started searching for a new vocalist. Solvi of Quarashi heard Tiny's "Straight Exeution" and asked him to join the band. Tiny accepted, and was featured on Quarashi's last album - Guerilla Disco.

After spending 6 years with Quarashi, Ólafsson became bored with making music and performing. He also claimed that he was forgetting how to speak Icelandic due to being away from Iceland for long periods of time. Because of these two reasons, Hössi left Quarashi in December 2002. Quarashi announced Hössi's departure from the group on their official messageboard on January 3, 2003.
